The City of New York Department of General Services
for Department of Correction
Infirmary/Mental Health Center, Rikers Island New York
This 1,000-bed maximum security institution,
projected at two-thirds male and one-third female, contains medical and psychiatric components to serve the inmate population on Rikers Island. The Infirmary/Mental Center provides opertional cost savings and security control benefits to the NYC Department of Correction. While improving the quality of medical services, this project reduces the reliance on off-island healthcare facilities.
The design solution considers the complex interrelationship of medical needs, security requirements, operational flexibity and economical staffing. Housing units include medical/surgical, communicable diseases, mental health, mental health assaultive and general population. Each housing unit contains a centrally located nursing station for medical staff and corrections officers, allowing maximum visibility and control.
Multi-story inamte housing modules are linked to a linear support corridor. Standardized radial housing modules allow a high degree of flexibility to accommodate the fluctuating inmate population.
