Otis Bantum Correctional Center 500-cell Addition, Rikers Island New York
To meet the anticipated demand of Mayor Dinkins' newly implemented "Safe Streets" program for New York City, the City implemented a build/design construction program for a 500-cell addiction to the Otis Bantum Correctional Center, an 800-bed minimum security correctional facility.
The 10-story addition will provide additional housing and expand the existing program area including visiting, commissary, food service, storage and shop area. The Otis Banum Correctional Center, completed in 1986, was originally designed by Gonchor & Sput, which was awarded the National Design Award of Merit for the project.
