The George R. Vierno is an 853-bed, maximum security correctional faciltity for men. This project was fast tracked for early completion with a significant savings for the City of New York.
The design of this facility. modeled after the Rose M. Singer Center, also designed by Gonchor, integrates operational effectiveness and staffing
efficiency with maximum security requirements. Control stations are centrally located to allow supervision of all inmate areas withing housing units.
The single cell housing units consits of several classifications: punitive and administrative segregation, maximum security, mental health observation and infirmary beds.
Administrative and inmate program spaces are organized as common building elements around a central recreation courtyard. Housing units are located along two main corridors which extend at right angles from the common areas.
Program spaces include common inmate areas for indoor and outdoor recreation, education, medical, social services, dining, visiting, and multi-purpose rooms, as well as administrative offices, insitutional and storage facitiies.
