Neonatal Special Care Unit Beth Israel Medical Center
Newark, New Jersey
Gonchor & Sput provided architectural services for a new Neonatal Special Care Unit (NNSCU) as part of an ongoing, major expansion project at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. The special needs of the NNSCU demanded that the design foster maximum care, efficiency, quick response and support for the 36 patient stations, 22 of them being Level III. Located on the seventh floor, the NNSCU is a Regional Perinatal Center.
The NNSCU is located on the same floor as the OB unit, increasing the opportunity for parental contact and care during the child's hospitalization. The new facilities, including the "overnight rooms", overlook the New York City skyline.
The most innovative feature for the maximum care unit is the specidically designed "island unit". Each island unit provides care and support for four bassinets, while allowing maximum visibility within the room. Each island unit is outfitted with equipment carousels including a rotating centerpiece which holds medical supplies enhancing the efficiency of the caregiver. Ancillary support, teaching, staff facilities and family visting areas are included.
